This post is a fun one for me… as of last week, my dear husband ventured into the crafting world with me! I could hardly believe it; he may very well never want to do it again, but it was fun while it lasted!
Let me make a quick observation that my husband is a football-loving, superhero-movie-watching, basketball-stats-afficionado guy who happens to also be completely head-over-heels for our little niece. In light of that fact, on occasion I can talk him into looking through racks of pretty, little-girl clothes, toys, movies, etc.
This particular adventure, which lead to our first ever co-operative crafting session, started when I needed to make a quick run to the craft store. Instead of sitting out in the car in the heat, he came in with me. I walked down the aisle with all the iron-ons and a few cute ones caught my eye. (surprise, huh?) I pointed them out to him, and then to my surprise, he continued looking through the packets of iron-ons. He ended up finding one which he wanted to get for our above-mentioned niece. I happily complied, and helped him find a little t-shirt onto which it could be ironed. He picked out a little pink one. (There were two stickers in the package, but we ended up using only one of them)
Once home, I showed him how to place the decal on the t-shirt, how to iron it on, and how to peel off the paper. In less than 3 minutes my husband had made a fun little t-shirt for his niece. He was pleased with his idea, I thought it was cute, and our niece? Well, her eyes lit up when her uncle said he had something for her, and she squealed delightedly and danced a funny, wiggly number when he gave her the little t-shirt. Considering she is only two years old, I’m not sure if she was excited about the t-shirt, or the fact that it was pink, or maybe just the fact that her uncle had given her something… whatever the case, it brought a big smile to my husband’s face, and consequently, to mine as well.
So, I thought I would share this special moment with you all… both the fact that the little t-shirt was a success in the eyes of our niece, and the fact that my husband was willing to take the plunge and make it for her!
By the way, the process is exactly as easy as it sounds. Basically, you place the sticker/iron-on decal face down onto the fabric. Leave the paper backing on the sticket and make sure it is positioned correctly. (centered, straight, etc)
The packaging suggested doing the ironing on top of a hard surface instead of an ironing board, so I used a large bamboo cutting board.
Using a hot iron, press the sticker onto the fabric. Push down a little on the iron to make sure there is enough pressure to get it that decal good and “stuck”. Rub the hot iron over it for about 1-2 minutes and let it cool. Then carefully peel up one corner to make sure it is set. We had to pull on it a little to get the sticker to let go of the paper backing, but in the end, everything worked beautifully!
Yes, tell Uncle Norm thanks. She really does love it! 🙂
