Where has the first half of February gone? I feel like I’ve been left out of something… a whole 17 days couldn’t have possibly already gone by!
I have been working on several projects at once… but since they are gifts, I don’t want to put pictures up just yet. In the meantime, I’ll let you in on the fact that one of them is a blanket for a very sweet little boy I know. I think it turned out great! The other is a surprise for a cute little girlie…but again, the pictures will have to wait.
I can’t help but wonder if any of you have thought about my suggestion to acquire a library card this year? I’ve been there quite a few times in the past two months. At the moment I am doing a little historical research, so I picked up (amongst various others) a book entitled Daily Life in the United States, 1920-1940 by David E. Kyvig. While my original plan was to read select chapters of the book, I found myself so curious and thoroughly fascinated by what I read, that I am now reading the book cover to cover! I love it when I stumble across a good book! I am definitely not a historian – not by any stretch of the imagination. Dates elude me and I get names switched all around… but I’ve always been incredibly curious about day-to-day life in the past. Up to this point I have been more interested (and thus, familiar) with the 19th century way of life than early 20th century, so I feel like I have discovered a whole new pocket of interesting concepts and people! I really have learned some interesting little tid-bits that are completely left out of the history books. Or perhaps I just wasn’t paying attention? Things like why “crooners” became popular (it had to do with the fact that radio transmitters couldn’t handle the more intense, operatic style of singing) and (of all things) the evolution of the grocery store. I had never thought about the fact that at one point it was a novel experience for customers to actually walk through a store and pick out the items they wanted instead of having the grocer do it for them. It must have been a very fascinating adventure your first time through!
I have managed once again to take off on a random tangent, sharing my case of nerdiness with the blogging world. I will now let you resume your nice, orderly lives. Don’t worry about me – I’ve got a wonderful weekend ahead surrounded by sane people. Maybe they’ll rub off on me…
If you were able to make yourself read this far, thanks for listening, and I’ll “see” you again soon!
Mary I just had to say you are a very interesting person! I love to learn things from you and I’m so glad we are in touch! thanks for you blog.
God bless you 🙂
